This book describes the dawn of photography, the influence of climate on photography in colonial Tamil Nadu, and its activities and development (1859-1864), the photographs of Madras city taken by German, Swedish and Swiss photographers, and the photographs of rural Tamil Nadu (1852-1876). The photographs of Tamil Nadu taken by photographers Linnaeus Tripp and Edmund David Lyon (1857-1858), and the development of photography (1867-1869). It also tells about the Madras Photographic Society and its activities (1857-1896), and the role of the Madras Art School in spreading photography (1850-1870). The Madras Photographic Studios (1860-1894) shed light on the photographic production of the people of Tamil Nadu under the British Empire (1868-1878). The book also explores the development of photography in Pondicherry under the French colonial rule (1845-1899) and the social impact of these developments.
